Not for Crime Prevention, but for "Peace of Mind." Why I Built the Anxiety Relief App "lockcalm"

On your way from the parking lot to a store, or right after leaving home and arriving at the station. Have you ever been suddenly struck by a wave of intense anxiety: "Wait... did I lock the car?"

Should you turn back to check? Or tell yourself, "I must have locked it subconsciously," and keep going? This "loss of memory due to unconscious habits" is something everyone experiences—a small, yet undeniable daily stress.

My decision to create the anxiety-relief app lockcalm was triggered precisely by this inescapable, unsettling feeling hitting me at the absolute worst possible moment.

An Intense Wave of Anxiety on a Pitch-Black Beach

I go night fishing quite often. On that particular day, I parked my car, grabbed my gear, and walked down a pitch-black path for about 15 minutes to reach my favorite spot.

I finally made it to the very tip of a long breakwater. Just as I was preparing my lure, thinking, "Alright, time to cast," an awful thought crossed my mind.

"...Wait. Did I lock the car?"

If I had just walked away from the car, I could have simply turned back to check. But I was at the end of a breakwater, a 15-minute walk away. Trudging all the way back was the last thing I wanted to do.

"No, I usually lock it automatically out of habit." "But... what if I forgot, and someone breaks into it?"

Once you fall into this mental loop, it's the worst. No matter how hard I tried to focus on the present moment, the image of my potentially unlocked car lingered in the back of my mind. A fun, relaxing hobby was completely ruined by one tiny seed of doubt.

At that moment, a realization hit me hard: "What I really need isn't an exaggerated crime-prevention system to catch thieves. What I need right now is a tool that shows me 'proof that the lock is secured' so I can feel peace of mind in just one second."

Designing for "Calm" Instead of "Crime Prevention"

Check-list apps, memo pads, and physical lock-checkers already exist. But none of them were what I was looking for.

With an app where you just check a box, you end up doubting your own memory anyway: "Did I actually check the lock before checking the box?" On the other hand, installing expensive security cameras or smart-key systems is overkill.

What we really crave is "proof." If we have a "photo" and the "exact time" of the moment we locked the door, we no longer need to rely on our flawed human memory.

That is exactly why I named this app lockcalm. It records that the lock is secured, bringing silence and peace (calm) back to the user's mind. My goal was to design something that achieves this singular purpose in the simplest and most beautiful way possible.

My Obsession: UI and Widgets that Erase Anxiety in 1 Second

When you're truly anxious, you don't want to deal with complicated operations. That’s why I was absolutely obsessed with "usability" and "delivering peace of mind in 1 second."

First, I unified the app's design with a deep navy and cyan color palette. This is gentle on the eyes when opened in dark places like a night parking lot, and simultaneously serves to soothe an anxious mind (Calm). I also included a flashlight feature as standard, ensuring you can clearly photograph the lock even in pitch darkness.

Furthermore, the feature I poured the most passion into during development was the "photo-enabled widget." When intense anxiety hits, haven't you ever felt that even searching for and opening an app is too much of a hassle?

In the premium version of lockcalm, you can display the "definitive photographic proof of the lock" and the "recorded time" prominently on your home screen. The moment you unlock your phone and glance at the home screen, you can confirm the facts with your own eyes. This is the ultimate form of peace of mind (UX) that I arrived at.

No More Turning Back to Double-Check

Since completing this app, "pointless anxiety and U-turns" have completely vanished from my daily life. Now, even at my night fishing spots, I can focus 100% on the ocean right in front of me.

If you've ever broken into a cold sweat wondering "Did I lock it...?" after walking away from the parking lot or while out and about, please give lockcalm a try. It will deliver true silence and peace to your mind.
